Falconer Stripe is a narrower, closer-set woven stripe from Mulberry's Stripes II book, in the same cotton and jute construction as the wider stripes in the range but scaled down to something closer to a classic ticking. The jute gives it a dry hand and a visible texture, and the narrow repeat makes it a versatile, quieter stripe than its wider siblings. Because the repeat is so narrow, it behaves almost like a texture from across a room, only resolving into distinct lines on closer inspection.

The composition is 70 per cent cotton and 30 per cent jute, 130 centimetres wide, with a 14.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There are three colourways: Indigo/Red is the most graphic, Plum the richest single tone, and Spice the warmest, each one easy to pull out of a Mulberry floral elsewhere in the room.

We use a close stripe like this on the pieces that need to work hard without competing for attention: dining chairs, a window seat, or the outside back and arms of a sofa fronted in a bolder print. It also makes a neat pair of curtains in a hallway or a boot room, and it is narrow enough to railroad without the join showing, which is useful on a wide window seat or bench. Because the repeat is narrow, pattern loss when matching is modest, but still ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge for a crisp result. Jute can shrink a little in damp conditions, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and avoid direct steam on the face of the cloth.
