Fantasia is a large-scale woven jacquard from the Modern Country collection, an exotic, swirling motif worked into a viscose and linen ground rather than printed on it, so the pattern has real depth and catches the light as you move past it. The viscose gives it a soft lustre; the linen keeps the hand dry enough that the cloth does not feel heavy. It is the most ornamental weave in the Modern Country range, closer to a paisley than a check.
The composition is 67 per cent viscose and 33 per cent linen. It is 139 centimetres wide, with a 63 centimetre vertical repeat and a 69.5 centimetre horizontal one, a large, generous scale. Tested to 40,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains and bedspreads. Two colourways: Teal is the cooler, more contemporary of the pair; Spice is warmer and sits well against old timber and leather.
We would put this on a substantial sofa or a pair of wing chairs, where a large-scale jacquard has room to make its case, or hang it as curtains in a drawing room with plain walls. It is not a cloth for a small piece; it wants space to be read properly. Pair it with a plain velvet or a fine stripe. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: with a repeat this size, allow at least one extra repeat per drop for curtains, and ask your upholsterer to centre the main motif on the inside back and seat of a chair or sofa. The viscose content means it will crease if folded, so ask for it to be delivered rolled. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
