Floral Rococo is a grand, formal floral wallpaper, drawn with the same eighteenth-century flourish as the Floral Pompadour fabrics and printed at a generous scale on a smooth non-woven ground. The scale is generous enough to show a full flower head within a single drop. It is one of the more ornamental papers in the Icons collection, with a symmetry and density that suits a proper, dressed room rather than anything casual.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 75 centimetre vertical repeat. There are five colourways: Blue, cool and formal; Aqua, fresher and lighter; Lovat/Red, a tweedy green against a warm red; Red/Green, the most traditional; and Red/Plum, the deepest and most opulent. Red/Plum is the one we use in a dining room that wants real drama.
We would paper a dining room or a principal bedroom in it, keeping the woodwork picked out in a plain, complementary colour, or use it on a single wall behind a bed. It is a formal paper, so we would keep the rest of the furnishings restrained. Curtains in the same room are best kept plain, in a single colour drawn from the paper. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction, and centre the first drop on the focal wall so the pattern balances either side of a chimney breast or bed. Assuming a standard 10 metre roll, a 4 metre wall with a 75 centimetre repeat will need four rolls. Allow extra for a chimney breast or any awkward angles, since the pattern must balance around them.
