Flying Ducks is exactly what it sounds like: a flock of wild fowl in flight, drawn in silhouette and printed as a rhythmic, all-over pattern on a smooth non-woven paper. It is a design with real English country pedigree, the kind of motif that has hung over a fireplace in china form for generations, translated here into something you can paper a whole wall with. The birds are drawn small enough that the pattern reads as texture from across a room.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 53 centimetre vertical repeat and a 52 centimetre horizontal one. There are five colourways: Charcoal is the graphic, high-contrast option; Sky/Moss and Slate Blue are the softer, more countrified pairings; Silver/Taupe is the quiet metallic-toned one; and Coral/Clay is the warmest and least expected. Sky/Moss is our first choice for a country hall.
We would paper a downstairs cloakroom or a boot room in it, where the motif has room to be enjoyed close up, or use it on the walls of a gun room or a study with dark woodwork. It also does a child's bedroom well in Sky/Moss. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction, and have your decorator centre the first drop so the flock reads as balanced either side of a chimney breast or door. On a standard 10 metre roll, expect three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall needs three rolls. Buy from one batch.
