Flying Ducks is a printed paper from Mulberry's Heirloom book, a classic country-house motif of ducks in flight drawn at a scale you would expect on a gun-room wall or a downstairs cloakroom rather than announced as a novelty. It is printed on a traditional paper rather than a non-woven base, which gives it the slightly matt, old-fashioned finish the design deserves. It is a pattern with a sense of humour that never quite tips into whimsy.
The paper is 100 per cent paper, 52 centimetres wide, with a 53 centimetre vertical repeat and a 52 centimetre horizontal one, so the birds sit at a companionable, even scale across the wall. There are three colourways: Sky/Moss is the freshest and most outdoorsy, Silver/Taupe the most restrained, and Aqua the coolest and most contemporary of the three.
We would use it in a cloakroom, a gun room or a passage that leads to a boot room, where its subject matter earns its place, or on the back wall of a study lined with books. It also works well as a single feature wall in a dining room with plain walls either side. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
As a traditional paper it should be pasted and hung by a decorator used to working with paper rather than a non-woven base, so check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's own paste and match instruction. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives three to four drops at a 2.4 metre ceiling, so a wall 4 metres wide needs three rolls with a little spare, all from the same batch.
