Follies is the wallpaper companion to the linen print of the same name, the same ornamental garden temples and pavilions scaled up onto a smooth non-woven ground so the scene has real room to unfold across a wall. Seen from a distance, the temples and pavilions read as a soft, parkland haze rather than a hard outline. It is one of the more architectural, scenic designs in the Icons collection, with a stillness and formality that suits a considered room.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 91 centimetre vertical repeat, a genuinely large scale that needs height to read properly. There are four colourways: Ebony, dark and dramatic; Plum, deep and atmospheric; Aqua, cooler and fresher; and Emerald, the richest green. Aqua and Emerald both read closer to the original fabric's garden palette. Ebony is the one we use in a dining room or a hall that wants real presence.
We would paper a dining room or a garden room in it, keeping the furniture and curtains plain so the scenic composition carries the room. It is also good on a single wall behind a bed in a principal bedroom. A hallway or a cloakroom with generous wall height will also carry the scale well. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction, and have your decorator centre the composition on the most visible wall. Assuming a standard 10 metre roll, a 4 metre wall with a 91 centimetre repeat will need four rolls, five if there are awkward returns. Buy from one batch.
