Fresco is one of the plainer papers in Mulberry's Modern Country book, a softly mottled, plaster-like finish rather than a printed motif, closer in spirit to a limewashed wall than to wallpaper in the usual sense. It is printed on a non-woven base, which keeps the surface even and forgiving of a wall that is not perfectly flat, and it gives a room the warmth of texture without asking it to carry a pattern.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven and 52 centimetres wide; because the finish is a texture rather than a repeating motif, there is no meaningful pattern repeat to match. There is one colourway, Putty, a warm, chalky neutral that sits between beige and stone and works with almost anything you put in front of it.

We would use it on all four walls of a room that needs calm rather than pattern, a bedroom or a landing, or as a backdrop for a strong collection of pictures or mirrors. It is also useful in a hallway that connects rooms in different colours, since it reads as a neutral rather than a decision. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room, as texture papers read differently in daylight and lamplight.

As a non-woven paper it is usually pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's own instruction. Because there is no motif to match, waste is minimal, and a standard 10 metre roll should give four to five drops at a 2.4 metre ceiling, so a 4 metre wall takes about two and a half rolls; always buy a little extra from the same batch.
