Game Birds Linen is the fabric companion to the Game Birds wallpaper, the same pheasant and partridge design printed here on pure linen rather than paper, part of the Bohemian Romance collection. Linen gives the birds a drier, more textured ground than the smooth paper version, and the slight irregularity in the weave makes the print look as though it has hung in the house for years. It is a substantial, generous design, properly suited to curtains that furnish a room on their own.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 147 centimetres wide, with a 61 centimetre vertical repeat and a 73.5 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 33,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains and bedspreads. Two colourways: Stone/Multi sets a pale neutral ground against several colours in the birds themselves; Red/Plum is deeper and warmer, closer to a traditional gun room palette. Stone/Multi is the one we use most, since it suits both light and dark rooms.

We would hang it as a full-length pair of curtains in a study, a dining room or a principal bedroom, or use it on a substantial armchair where the birds can be read up close. The matching wallpaper, printed on non-woven paper, lets you carry the design onto the walls in the same room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: allow at least one full 61 centimetre repeat per drop for matching, and ask your maker to place a complete bird at the leading edge of each curtain. Pure linen moves with humidity, so allow a little extra in the hem before the final length is set. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
