Game Birds is a wallpaper drawn from the same sporting archive as the house's fabrics, pheasants and partridges laid out in a dense, all-over composition on a smooth non-woven ground. It has the wit and detail of an old natural history plate, printed at a scale that reads as a proper pattern from across a room rather than a repeat you have to hunt for, and it wears its heritage lightly rather than solemnly.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 60 centimetre vertical repeat. There are six colourways: Charcoal, dark and dramatic; Indigo, a deep, inky blue; Antique, warm and aged; Forest, a rich green; Red/Plum, the most traditional; and Multi, which draws on several colours at once. Charcoal is the one we use most often in a study or a dining room, since it reads almost as a textured neutral from a normal viewing distance.
We would paper a dining room, a study or a gun room in it, keeping the furniture plain leather and dark wood so the birds stand out. It also makes a striking small cloakroom, and a good backdrop to a run of framed sporting prints or a display of old guns. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction before you start. Assuming a standard 10 metre roll, a 4 metre wall with a 60 centimetre repeat will need three to four rolls. Buy from a single batch to avoid any variation in the print.
