Game Birds is a classic Mulberry Home subject, pheasant and partridge drawn in profile among grasses and foliage, printed on a smooth non-woven paper at a scale generous enough for the birds to read properly from across a room. It is heraldic in spirit without being a coat of arms, the sort of design that has been on the walls of English gun rooms and studies for generations, and it wears that history lightly.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 68.5 centimetres wide, with a 61 centimetre vertical repeat and a 68.5 centimetre horizontal one, so each width carries a full, uninterrupted scene. Three colourways: Charcoal is the moodiest, best in a room with little natural light; Stone is pale and forgiving; and Multi brings in several colours at once, closer to the birds' natural plumage. Stone is the one we specify most, since it sits happily behind both dark furniture and pale.
We would paper a study, a dining room or a downstairs cloakroom in it, keeping the curtains and upholstery plain so the birds carry the room. It is also good behind open shelving where china and glass need a backdrop with some presence. The matching Game Birds fabric is printed on pure linen for curtains or upholstery. Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the exact paste and match, and centre the first drop on the focal wall so the birds sit symmetrically either side of a chimney breast. On a standard 10 metre roll, expect around three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall wants three rolls with a little to spare.
