Glendale is a large printed floral from Mulberry's Country Weekend book, drawn with the loose, leafy generosity of a proper hedgerow rather than a formal garden border. It is printed on a plain cotton ground with a dry, matt hand, and the scale is big enough to read as a single sweep of pattern rather than a repeat you notice joining, which is what gives it its slightly wild, unstudied character.
It is a 100 per cent cotton cloth, 140 centimetres wide, with a 91 centimetre vertical repeat and a 69 centimetre horizontal one, so it needs a proper drop to show itself properly. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Teal/Leaf, a cool blue-green ground with the leaf motif picked out a shade darker, which we find sits well against old oak, brown furniture or a stone floor.
We would hang it as full-length curtains in a sitting room or a dining room with a tall window, interlined so the pattern has proper weight, and keep the upholstery in the room to a plain wool or one of the Croft Weaves rather than another large print. It also makes a good loose cover for a garden-room sofa or a pair of armchairs. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With a 91 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop when you calculate curtain quantities, and ask your maker to place a complete motif just below the heading. For upholstery, centre the pattern on the inside back and budget for more waste than a plain would need, particularly on a two-seat or three-seat sofa. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
