Gorton is a woven check from the Country Walk collection, close in scale at 64 by 66 centimetres so it sits somewhere between a windowpane and a proper tartan. The yarn is a blend of acrylic, polyester and wool, which gives the check a slight sheen and enough body to hold its shape as a curtain without the weight of a pure wool cloth. It has the clubby, country-house look Mulberry does so well, without asking to be treated as precious.

The composition is 42 per cent acrylic, 38 per cent polyester and 20 per cent wool. It is 132 centimetres wide, with a 64 centimetre vertical repeat and a 66 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Red/Teal, a warm red set against a cool teal ground that reads as considered rather than loud, and sits well against old oak or a stone fireplace.

We would hang Gorton as full-length curtains in a hall, a dining room or a study, where a bold check earns its keep, or use it as a bedspread with the walls kept plain. It pairs naturally with a smaller Country Walk print on a cushion or a chair, letting the check carry the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: a check this size needs setting square, so ask your maker to keep the grid level from the first drop and to match it across the width of a pair of curtains. Allow a little extra cloth for that matching. It must be dry cleaned rather than washed, and pressed only from the reverse.
