Grand Flying Ducks takes the same banking flight of ducks as the velvet of the same family and enlarges it to wallpaper scale, printed on a smooth non-woven paper as one of the Icons Wallpapers, Mulberry's collection of signature, best-loved patterns. At this size the birds read as a proper flock rather than a scattered motif, strong enough to carry a whole wall on its own.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 67 centimetre vertical repeat. There are seven colourways: Grey/Blue and Red/Blue are the two-colour versions, one cool and one with more warmth; Blue, Plum, Plaster, Sage and Emerald are single-colour grounds, ranging from the palest neutral to the deepest jewel tone. Plaster is the easiest starting point for a first-time buyer; Emerald or Plum for a room that wants real drama.
We would paper a gun room, a study or a downstairs cloakroom in it, where the subject is entirely at home, or use Plaster through a hall where a quieter version of the pattern is wanted. If you have the fabric elsewhere in the house, matching the two in the same room is a proper, considered way to decorate. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match, and plan the first drop so a complete duck, not a fragment, sits at eye level. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls. Buy from a single batch.
