Hammock Stripe does what its name promises: a printed cotton stripe with the easy, sun-bleached feel of an old garden hammock, the bands running across the width rather than down the length. The ground is a plain 100 per cent cotton with a dry, matt hand, and the printed edge to each band gives it a softness a woven stripe never quite has, with enough natural cotton left showing between the bands to keep the whole thing light on its feet.

It is 132 centimetres wide with a 12 centimetre repeat running along the length; because the stripe runs selvedge to selvedge there is no horizontal repeat to match. Tested to 35,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains, loose covers and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Teal, a clean, confident blue-green we use as a foil to warmer prints elsewhere in the Festival collection, or on its own in a room that wants a single, calm colour.

Our first instinct is upholstery: railroaded so the stripe runs vertically down a slipper chair or a window seat, where it looks tailored rather than deckish. As curtains, hung as it comes, it gives a bedroom or a bathroom a crisp, horizontal line that suits a more contemporary room. It also makes a good Roman blind. Pair it with a plain linen or a small floral in the same blue-green. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: railroading a 132 centimetre cloth means your finished drop becomes the limiting width, so for a vertical stripe at a window you are limited to around 128 centimetres before a seam is needed. For seat cushions, ask your upholsterer to line the stripes up across every seam, which is where a stripe is judged. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
