Harlech is a woven wool tartan, named for the Welsh castle and coloured with the same layered, multi-tone approach a real Highland sett uses rather than a simple two-colour check. It is woven, not printed, so the grid is identical on both faces and the wool takes a genuine depth of colour where the bands cross. It is one of the more heraldic cloths in the wools range, the kind we reach for when a room wants real Scottish weight.

The composition is 100 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 49 centimetre vertical repeat and a 37 centimetre horizontal one, tested to 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Five colourways, each built from three overlapping tones: Charcoal/Red and Plum/Green are the darker, moodier setts; Red/Sage and Russet/Teal are warmer; and Red/Lovat/Sand is the most classically Highland of the five.

We would put this on a wing chair or a club fender in a hall or a study, or hang it as curtains in a room with a leather sofa and old brown furniture. A bedspread in it, with plain linen sheets, makes a proper winter bedroom. Pair it with a plain wool like Beauly or Leith on the rest of the seating. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A tartan this layered has to be set square, so ask your upholsterer to centre the sett on the inside back and match it across any seam, allowing extra cloth for that. For curtains, allow one full repeat per drop and match the pair carefully at the leading edge. Dry clean only, and avoid steaming the face, which can flatten the weave.
