Hedgerow belongs to Mulberry's Small Prints collection, a family of whimsical flora and fauna motifs and quieter geometrics drawn from the house's own archive. This particular design takes its cue from the berries and leaves of an English hedge, printed on a viscose and linen ground that gives the cloth a soft lustre and enough body to hang well. It is a busier scale than the collection's name suggests, closer to a proper print than a sprig.

The composition is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 37 centimetre vertical repeat and a 39 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Indigo is the deep, workable blue; Espresso is warm and dark; Aqua is fresh and cool; Emerald is the richest green; and Russet is the most autumnal. Espresso is the one we turn to for a room with a lot of pale furniture.

We would use it for curtains in a hall or a dining room, or on a pair of chairs either side of a fireplace. It also makes a good bedspread with a plain linen sheet turned back over it. Pair it with Croft Trellis from the same Small Prints collection for a considered, layered look, or with a plain wool. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: allow one 37 centimetre repeat per drop for matching, and ask your maker to place a full motif just below the heading of a curtain. The viscose content gives it drape but also means it will crease if folded, so have it delivered rolled. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
