Heirloom Tapestry is a printed cotton that borrows the look of an old needlework tapestry, a dense floral drawn as if it were stitched, with the slightly stepped edges and flat colour of a worked canvas. It is printed rather than woven, which keeps it light enough for curtains and gives the colour a clarity a true tapestry weave would not have. The 100 per cent cotton ground is smooth and dry, and the design reads as something inherited.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with a 61 centimetre vertical repeat and a 33.5 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Teal/Red, where a deep blue-green carries the ground and a soft red picks out the flowers; it is a combination that works with dark timber, brass and a Persian rug without any effort.

We would use it on a pair of curtains in a dining room or a panelled sitting room, and on a single armchair or a slipper chair where the tapestry look can be enjoyed close to. A bedspread in it, with plain linen sheets and a wool blanket, is a very English bed. It pairs with Bruton Check in Teal or a plain velvet. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: allow one full 61 centimetre repeat per drop and ask your maker to place a complete motif at the hem. On an armchair, centre the main flower on the inside back and let the seat take the denser ground. It should be lined and, being a cotton print, kept out of strong direct sun. Dry clean only.
