Inveraray takes its name from the castle on Loch Fyne, seat of the Dukes of Argyll, and it is as close as Mulberry comes to a true tartan cloth: a small, tight woven check in 100 per cent wool with the slightly felted, hairy surface that only wool gives a weave. It has real Highland credentials, and it is the cloth we would choose over a printed check whenever the room can carry the extra weight and warmth.

The wool is 100 per cent, 150 centimetres wide, with a 16 centimetre vertical repeat and a 9.5 centimetre horizontal one, a small, dense sett. Six colourways: Woodsmoke is the softest neutral; Charcoal/Blue is cool and formal; Lovat is the tweedy green; Russet/Teal and Russet/Green both pair a warm ground with a cooler check; and Red/Green is the most traditional tartan combination of the six. Lovat is the one we specify most for a study.

We would put this on a wing chair, a footstool or a window seat in a study or a gun room, or hang it as curtains in a hall where the pattern can be seen from a distance. It also makes a fine bedspread over a plain linen. Pair it with a plain wool or one of the tartan wallpapers. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: a check this size must be set square, so ask your upholsterer to centre it on the inside back and seat and match it across the front border, allowing extra cloth for that. Wool blends respond to a light steam from the reverse but must be dry cleaned, never washed.
