Islay, like Nevis, takes its name from Scotland, and its pattern from a small, repeating sprig of thistle and berry drawn at a modest scale across a smooth non-woven paper. It belongs to the Country Walk Wallpapers collection, and it is the most versatile design of the group, offered in nine colourways so it can be matched to almost any room in a house, and to almost any bigger pattern already in a scheme.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 22.5 centimetre vertical repeat. There are nine colourways in total; among them, Antique and Soft Blue are the gentlest and most neutral, Indigo and Woodsmoke the deepest, and Aqua, Lovat, Emerald and Tea Rose bring in more colour, from cool green-blue to a soft, dusty pink. Blue/Red is the most traditional two-colour option.
We would paper a whole bedroom or a dressing room in one of the paler colourways, or use Indigo or Woodsmoke on a single wall for more depth. Because the range is so wide, it is also a useful paper for matching several bedrooms in the same house without repeating a single colourway, which is a small but real economy on a multi-room project. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives four drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls. Buy every roll from a single batch, particularly in the paler colourways, where any shading between batches shows most readily.
