Lindisfarne Plaid is a woven wool tartan named for the holy island off the Northumberland coast, a proper Highland-weight check with the layered, overlapping colouring of a genuine ancestral sett. It is woven rather than printed, so the grid is identical on both sides, and at 150 centimetres it is wide enough to railroad for upholstery without a join. It is one of the most heraldic cloths Mulberry makes, and it is built to last. The island itself has long been a place of pilgrimage, and the tartan carries something of that gravity, a cloth for a room that wants real presence.
The composition is 100 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 28 centimetre vertical repeat and a 25 centimetre horizontal one, tested to 63,000 rubs on the Wyzenbeek cotton duck scale, exceptionally hardwearing. There are eight colourways in total; Charcoal/Red, Red/Gold, Russet and Red/Teal are four of the more representative setts, ranging from the darkest and moodiest to the warmest and most golden.
We would put this on a sofa or a wing chair in a hall or a study that takes real daily wear, or hang it as curtains in a room with a leather chesterfield. A bedspread in one of the darker setts makes a proper winter room. Pair it with a plain wool like Beauly or Leith. It also upholsters a fender stool well. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A tartan this bold has to be set square, so ask your upholsterer to centre the sett on the inside back and match it across any seam, allowing extra cloth for that. For curtains, allow a full repeat per drop. Given the rub count, it is well suited to a hardworking piece of furniture. Dry clean only.
