Lomond Velvet is a large, printed botanical set onto a viscose and cotton pile, part of the Bohemian Velvets group and named for the Scottish loch. The repeat is generous, 112 centimetres, so the pattern unfurls slowly down a curtain rather than repeating too often, and the velvet ground gives the print a depth and softness a flat cloth cannot manage, especially in low evening light.
The composition is 55 per cent viscose and 45 per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, with a 112 centimetre vertical repeat and a 68.5 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 40,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. There are four colourways: Antique, warm and aged; Sage, soft and muted; Emerald, the richest green; and Red/Plum, the deepest and most formal. Emerald is the one we would choose for a room that wants real colour without a lot of pattern.
We would hang this as a single generous pair of curtains in a drawing room, where the large repeat has room to show itself, or upholster one substantial chair in it. It is too much pattern for a whole sofa in most rooms, so keep the rest of the scheme in plains or a fine stripe, and let the velvet do the work on its own. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: with a 112 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop and check the calculation with your maker before you order, since a short curtain will lose much of the pattern. Velvet must be cut with the pile running one way throughout. Dry clean only, and never iron the face.
