Manor Stripe is a woven stripe in cotton and jute, the heavier and more rustic of the collection's two jute stripes, with the stripe running down the length of the cloth in blue and red on a natural ground. The jute gives it a dry, coarse-grained texture and a visible slub, so the stripe has a handwoven quality and the cloth sits with a bit of weight. It is the sort of stripe that has been on the bench in the hall of every good English house.

The composition is 65 per cent cotton and 35 per cent jute, the width 137 centimetres, and the stripe repeats at 19.5 centimetres across the width. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Blue/Red, and it is a good one: the two colours are muted enough to work with the reds and blues elsewhere in Garden Party, and the natural ground keeps it from looking nautical. It reads as a neutral once it is in a room.

We would use it on a hall bench or a window seat, on the seats and backs of a set of kitchen chairs, on a pair of unlined summer curtains in a bedroom, or as a Roman blind in a cloakroom. On a sofa, it is best on the outside back and arms with a floral on the front. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, as woven stripes can wander slightly, and to match the stripe across any seams and along the front of a cushion. Jute does not like water, so it must be dry cleaned, and it should be lined for curtains to stop the sun bleaching the blue.
