Martock Sprig is a small printed sprig on a plain cotton ground, the kind of pattern that reads as a texture from the door and as flowers only when you sit down. The repeat is tiny, 6.5 by 5.5 centimetres, so it is an all-over rather than a pattern with a direction, and it does the job small prints have always done in English houses: it fills in behind the big florals and makes a room feel furnished. The 100 per cent cotton ground is smooth and dry.

It comes 138 centimetres wide with a 6.5 centimetre vertical repeat and a 5.5 centimetre horizontal one, which means almost no waste in cutting. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Blue and Red are single-colour sprigs on a pale ground, Teal/Green is the softer two-colour version, and Red/Green is the one that ties directly to Firle and Garden Party. Blue is our default for a guest bedroom.

We use it for the inside of bed curtains, for a headboard, for lining a wardrobe or a cupboard, and for curtains in a small bedroom where a big print would take over. It also makes a good seat pad for a kitchen chair and a bedspread under a wool blanket. The matching Martock Sprig wallpaper in the same colourway makes a room in one go. A small sprig is forgiving to make up: there is no real pattern matching to worry about, so estimate as you would a plain. Still, it should be lined for curtains and it will look better with a light interlining. For piping on a headboard, cut the strips on the straight rather than the bias to keep the sprig legible. Dry clean only.
