Medford Stripe is the boldest of the Westerly Stripes, a broad, confident band printed down a plain cotton ground with a 45 centimetre repeat, wide enough to read as a proper stripe from across a room rather than a fine line. It has the assurance of an old awning or a deckchair canvas, printed rather than woven, which keeps the colour flat and the edges crisp. It is the stripe we reach for when a scheme needs a single, clear statement rather than a supporting texture.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with the stripe repeating every 45 centimetres across the width; there is no vertical repeat, so it runs the length of the cloth uninterrupted. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Blue/Rust, a confident navy band against a warm, rusted red, a pairing that reads as more grounded than nautical.

We would use it for curtains in a hall or a boot room, where a bold stripe gives a plain space some spine, or on the seats of a set of dining chairs. It also makes a striking bench cushion, a pair of deckchair-style loungers for a terrace used through the summer, or the outside back of a sofa fronted in a floral. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with a stripe this wide, placement matters, so ask your maker to centre a full band on each curtain and to match the stripe across the leading edges of a pair; on upholstery, keep it running vertically and centred on the seat. Line curtains to protect the colour from strong sun, and have the cloth dry cleaned rather than washed.
