Moorland is one of the Small Prints, a compact, all-over design with a folk-art quality, printed on a plain cotton ground so the colour sits crisply on the surface. We like it best in a room where the walls already carry pattern or colour. It reads as a texture from across a room and only resolves into its small motifs up close, which is exactly the job a good small print has always done in an English house: filling in behind a bigger floral without competing with it.

It is 100 per cent cotton, 134 centimetres wide, with a 37 centimetre vertical repeat and a 38 centimetre horizontal one, an almost square scale that keeps waste modest. It is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There are four colourways: Blue, crisp and clean; Green, fresh and leafy; Ochre, warm and golden; and Russet, the deepest and most autumnal. Ochre is the one we reach for in a room that wants warmth without a large motif.

We use small prints like this on the inside of bed curtains, on a headboard, or as curtains in a small bedroom where a bigger design would take over. It also makes a good seat pad for a kitchen chair, and it sits happily under a larger Mulberry floral in the same room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with a repeat this small, there is very little waste in cutting, so estimate it much as you would a plain. It should still be lined for curtains, and a light interlining will improve the hang. A cool iron on the reverse will settle any bed-curtain creases before hanging. Dry clean only, and keep it out of a kitchen where grease can mark the cotton.
