Morning Gallop Velvet takes the house's galloping horses and prints them onto a cotton velvet ground, so the animals gain real depth against the pile and catch the light as you move past them. It is a more substantial, evening version of the linen print, suited to a piece of furniture that wants to be noticed as much as sat in, and one we return to often for a study.
The composition is 88 per cent cotton and 12 per cent polyester, 134 centimetres wide, with a 49 centimetre vertical repeat and a 67 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 50,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. There are two colourways: Grey/Sand, cool and neutral, and Teal, richer and more distinct. Grey/Sand is the one we use when the rest of the room is already busy with pattern.
We would use it on a wing chair, a footstool or a headboard, where the horses have room to be seen properly, or as curtains in a hall or a study. It is a good deal of pattern for a whole sofa, so we tend to keep it to one generous piece and plains everywhere else, letting the velvet make its own case. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: velvet must be cut with the pile running one way throughout a piece, so tell your maker before you order and check every cut length against the pile direction. With a 49 centimetre repeat, allow one extra repeat per drop for curtains, or extra yardage for a chair. Dry clean only, and press only from the reverse.
