Mulberry Ancient Tartan takes the house's own tartan, in the old, muted colouring known in Scotland as an ancient sett, and prints it onto a smooth non-woven paper. It is the most heraldic thing in the wallpaper range, a proper woven-look check rather than a decorative border, and it brings the same clubby, country-house warmth to a wall that a length of tartan cloth brings to a kilt or a rug. The 26 centimetre repeat keeps the check to a manageable, readable scale.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 26 centimetre vertical repeat. There are two colourways: Red/Charcoal, a deep, smoky check with real weight to it, and Mulberry Tartan, the house colourway in the brand's own dark plum-red. Order a sample of each and look at them away from the window, since a tartan this dark changes considerably in artificial light.

We would use it in a study, a gun room or a small hallway where the check can be enjoyed at close range, or on the walls of a cloakroom with dark woodwork. It sits well below a picture rail with a plain wool curtain, and it pairs naturally with any of the Mulberry Wools plaids on the furniture in the same room. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction, and keep the check dead level from the first drop, since any lean is more obvious on a grid than on a floral. On a standard 10 metre roll, expect three to four drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall needs three rolls. Buy from a single batch.
