Mulberry Ancient Tartan is one of the house's signature designs, a proper woven-look tartan redrawn for the wall: the sett is printed with enough depth and shading that it reads as cloth rather than a flat grid, which is what a good tartan paper should do. It is printed on a smooth non-woven paper, 70 centimetres wide, and it carries the heraldic, clubby character that runs through the whole Mulberry Home range.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 23 centimetre vertical repeat. There are eight colourways in total; among them, Woodsmoke is the smoky neutral, Indigo the deep classic blue, Aqua a fresher cool tone, Emerald a rich green, and Red/Blue the most traditional two-colour sett. With eight to choose from, it is worth ordering two or three samples and living with them for a few days, since a tartan changes character considerably between a study and a hallway.
We would use it in a study, a snug or a gentlemen's cloakroom, where its clubby character is exactly right, or on the walls of a stairwell, where a strong pattern can carry a tall, awkward space. It pairs naturally with a plain wool or a leather chair. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match, and keep the sett plumb and level from the very first drop, since any lean shows more in a tartan than in a plain stripe. A 4 metre wall takes around two rolls at this width. Buy from one batch.
