Mulberry China is a chinoiserie wallpaper, blossom and branch drawn in the willowy, asymmetric manner of an export porcelain pattern, printed on a smooth non-woven paper with a fine metallic line running through the design. It belongs to Bohemian Romance, and it is the most obviously decorative piece in the group, a paper that behaves like a piece of china brought to the scale of a wall.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 68.5 centimetres wide, with a 68.5 centimetre repeat, so the drop matches straight across without any offset. There is one colourway, Silver/Taupe, a warm neutral ground with the branch and blossom picked out in a soft metallic silver, which catches the light without ever reading as bright or brassy. It is a paper that changes character between daylight and lamplight.

We would paper a dining room or a formal hall in it, where the metallic line has room to catch candlelight, or use it as a single wall behind a console with a collection of china on it, which is as literal a pairing as decorating allows. It is also a good choice for a powder room, where the scale can be enjoyed at close range. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the paste and match, and take particular care with a metallic ink, since it shows any misalignment more readily than a plain colour. As a rule of thumb, a standard 10 metre roll gives three drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls. Buy from a single batch to keep the metallic tone consistent.
