Mulberry Garden is a full, leafy floral printed on a cotton and linen ground, drawn with the same loose, bohemian hand as the rest of the collection. The 58 centimetre repeat gives the flowers real size, but the horizontal repeat is short, 27.4 centimetres, so the design runs up the cloth in a dense, climbing column rather than spreading out across it. It is a print that makes a room feel planted rather than decorated.

The composition is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent linen, giving a smooth face for the print and a soft, dry hand. It comes 137 centimetres wide with a 58 centimetre vertical repeat and a 27.4 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Blue/Green, fresh and cool; Antique, on a warm, aged ground; and Red/Green, the traditional one. Antique is the most forgiving with existing furniture.

We would use it for curtains in a bedroom with the Mulberry Garden wallpaper in the same colourway on the walls, which is a properly English way to do a room, or on a pair of armchairs in a sitting room with a plain linen sofa. A bedspread in it over a plain headboard is enough pattern for a small room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: because the horizontal repeat is short, widths join without any awkward gaps, but you still need one full 58 centimetre repeat per drop for the vertical match. On chairs, ask your upholsterer to run the climbing design upwards from the seat and to centre it on the inside back. Line curtains, and dry clean rather than wash.
