Mulberry Hounds Linen is a printed procession of running hounds, drawn mid-stride in the graphic, slightly stylised manner of an old sporting print, set on a pure linen ground. It belongs to the Festival collection, and it is one of the most overtly equestrian designs Mulberry makes, closer to a hunting scarf or an old game larder than a florist's border. The linen keeps the print dry and matt, which suits the subject.
The cloth is 100 per cent linen, 141 centimetres wide, with a 30 centimetre vertical repeat and a wide 94 centimetre horizontal one, so the hounds have real room to run along the length of a curtain or a pelmet. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Multi, where several of the collection's colours appear together across the pack, which keeps the design from reading as a single flat silhouette.
We would use it for curtains in a gun room, a hall or a study, or on the seat of a set of dining chairs where the hounds can be enjoyed at close range. It also makes a good bedspread in a boy's bedroom, or a window seat cushion in a boot room. Pair it with a plain wool or a check rather than another print. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: with a 94 centimetre horizontal repeat, plan widths carefully so the hounds join up convincingly across a pair of curtains, and allow a full 30 centimetre repeat per drop for the vertical match. Line curtains to protect the print from strong sun, and have the cloth dry cleaned rather than washed, since pure linen can shrink.
