Mulberry Hounds Velvet takes a running hound, one of the house's oldest sporting motifs, and prints it across a cotton velvet ground rather than a flat cloth, so the pattern has real depth and the pile catches the light differently depending on which way you brush it. The hound is drawn at a good clip, legs stretched in full stride, so the print has real movement to it rather than sitting static on the cloth. It is a design with plenty of wit in it, at home in a house that takes its field sports seriously and its interiors not too seriously.

The composition is 88 per cent cotton and 12 per cent polyester, 136 centimetres wide, with a 31 centimetre vertical repeat and a 91 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 50,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains, and recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Multi, which sets the hounds and the ground in several tones rather than one.

This is a velvet for a proper piece of furniture: a wing chair, a chesterfield, or the seat of a window bench in a hall or a boot room, where the pattern will be seen and handled often. It also makes a striking pair of cushions on a plain linen sofa. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: with a 91 centimetre horizontal repeat, cutting economically takes some planning, so have your upholsterer calculate before you order and centre a hound on the most visible panel of the piece. Velvet should always be cut with the pile running the same way throughout, and dry cleaned rather than washed.
