Mulberry Ticking is a proper woven ticking stripe from the Westerly Stripes book, the narrow, close-set line you would expect on an old mattress or a deckchair, given a slightly more refined weight for use around the rest of the house. Because it is woven rather than printed, the stripe is the same crisp line on both faces of the cloth, which matters wherever both sides might be seen.

It is a 100 per cent cotton cloth, 134 centimetres wide, and tested to 16,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, which suits curtains and lighter upholstery rather than a piece in daily hard use. There are two colourways, Indigo and Blue, both classic ticking tones that we treat as a working neutral rather than a statement, easy to place alongside almost anything else in the Mulberry range.

We use a ticking like this on the pieces that want a plain, practical cloth with just enough character: a window seat, a pair of simple unlined curtains in a bathroom or a utility room, or as a lining fabric on the inside of an open cupboard or a linen press. It also makes a good bolster or piped cushion trim. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

As a woven stripe there is no printed motif to match, so cutting is straightforward, though a true ticking still benefits from being cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge for a neat, square result. Because the Martindale figure is on the lower side, keep it to curtains, blinds and lightly used seating rather than a family sofa in constant use. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron on the face.
