Mull is a woven wool from Mulberry's Wools II book, named for the Hebridean island and woven with a fine, close herringbone that gives it the character of a proper tweed rather than a furnishing cloth trying to look like one. The wool has real body and a slightly hairy surface, and the herringbone is set at a scale that reads as texture from across a room, resolving into its zigzag structure only on close inspection. It is the kind of cloth that looks as though it has always been in the house, rather than newly arrived.
It is 100 per cent wool, 150 centimetres wide, with a 10 centimetre vertical repeat and a 16.5 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 25,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is recommended for curtains and general upholstery rather than the heaviest daily use. There is one colourway, Russet, a warm, biscuity brown not far from the colour of bracken in autumn, which reads as a neutral in most schemes rather than a strong accent. At 150 centimetres, it is wide enough to avoid a centre seam on most standard curtains.
We use it for curtains in a study, a hallway or anywhere that wants some warmth and weight, and on dining chairs or a window seat where a textured wool earns its keep without shouting. It sits naturally alongside a plain linen, a check or one of Mulberry's tartans, and it wears the country-house look better than almost anything else in the collection. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
As with any close-woven wool, ask your maker to keep the herringbone running the same way across a pair of curtains or a run of seating, and allow a little extra at the repeat for a clean match where two widths must be joined. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
