Nevis takes its name from the Highland mountain and is a woven wool check that leans more tweed than tartan, a soft, broken check rather than a crisp, formal sett. The blend gives the surface a heathered, slightly mottled colour, since the yarns themselves are mixed rather than flat, and the whole cloth has the dry warmth of a good country jacket. It is the wool we would choose first for a room that wants texture more than pattern.
The wool is 100 per cent, 150 centimetres wide, with a 28 centimetre vertical repeat and a 25 centimetre horizontal one. Tested to 35,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains and bedspreads. There are ten colourways in total; among them, Granite is the cool, quiet neutral, Blue a workable everyday tone, Lovat/Heather a soft green and mauve, Red/Green the most traditional, and Sage/Aqua the freshest of the range. With so many to choose from, it is worth ordering several samples and comparing them in your own light before deciding.
We would put this on a wing chair, a club sofa or an ottoman in a study or a snug, or hang it as curtains in a room with a fire that gets real use. It is also a good bedspread for a colder room. A making-up note: a check this size must be set square, so ask your upholsterer to centre it on the inside back and seat and match it across the front border, allowing extra cloth for that. Wool blends respond to a light steam from the reverse but must always be dry cleaned, never washed.
