New Vintage Floral is Mulberry's revisiting of one of its best-loved florals, a loose, faded bouquet with the slightly worn, sun-bleached look of an old cotton found in a country house linen press. It is printed on a cotton, linen and viscose union cloth; the viscose gives the ground a soft lustre and a heavier, more fluid drape than a plain linen, and the polyester keeps the whole thing stable. The scale is large and the drawing is relaxed, so the effect is of something that has always been there.

The composition is 42 per cent cotton, 28 per cent linen, 22 per cent viscose and 8 per cent polyester. It is 132 centimetres wide with a 67 centimetre vertical repeat and a 66 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Soft Red/Lovat, where the flowers sit against a muted grey-green, and Red/Green, the brighter and more traditional of the pair. Both go with old brown furniture and worn leather without any fuss.

This is a cloth for a big sofa or a deep armchair, where the faded print does not need to shout, or for curtains in a sitting room with a wool plain on the seating. We also like it on a pair of bedroom chairs with a small sprig elsewhere in the room. It sits well with Mulberry's checks from Bruton Weaves. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a repeat of 67 centimetres you will lose a fair amount to matching, so allow an extra repeat per drop for curtains and an extra metre or so for a sofa, and ask your upholsterer to centre the main bouquet on the inside back. Line curtains and interline them if you can, as the viscose content makes the cloth drape well but it will need support. Dry clean only.
