Newport Stripe is a printed stripe with a hand-drawn quality, the bands running down the length of the cotton ground but varied enough along their length that the design carries a vertical repeat as well as a horizontal one. It is part of Westerly Stripes, and it has more life in it than a ruled ticking, closer to a stripe drawn freehand than one set with a rule. That small irregularity is what keeps it from feeling mechanical.
The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with an 11 centimetre vertical repeat and a 17 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Blue/Red, a crisp navy and a soft red on a natural ground, a pairing with just enough warmth to keep it from reading as purely nautical.
We would use it for curtains in a hall or a child's bedroom, on the seat and back of a set of dining chairs, or as the outside back and arms of a sofa fronted in one of Mulberry's florals. A Roman blind in it above a kitchen sink is a simple, cheerful thing, and it takes a plain linen well on the opposite wall. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: because the stripe carries a vertical repeat as well as a horizontal one, treat it as a pattern rather than a plain stripe when estimating, and allow one 11 centimetre repeat per drop. Ask your maker to match the stripe across the width of a pair of curtains and across any seams on upholstery. It must be dry cleaned, never washed.
