Newport Stripe is a printed stripe wallpaper for the Country Walk collection, even, regular bands on a smooth non-woven ground that give a wall some structure without competing with the collection's florals and animal prints. It is the kind of paper we reach for when a room needs a plain wall that is not actually plain, and it hangs well alongside almost anything else the house makes.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 21.5 centimetre vertical repeat. There are five colourways: Blue/Red, crisp and classic; Blue/Sand, softer and more neutral; Lovat, a tweedy green; Red/Green, the most traditional; and Old Red/Sand, faded and warm. Blue/Sand is the one we use most often as a background to a busier room, since it behaves almost like a textured neutral.
We would paper a hallway or a staircase in it, where an even stripe reads well from a distance, or use it on the walls of a dressing room with a Country Walk floral on the curtains. It is also a good choice for a small cloakroom, or for lining the back of open bookshelves where a flash of pattern is welcome. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's paste and match instruction, and take particular care to keep the first drop plumb, since any lean shows immediately on a stripe. Assuming a standard 10 metre roll, a 4 metre wall will need three rolls, four if there are doors or windows to work around. Buy from one batch.
