Nomad Velvet is a cotton velvet with a subtle, woven-in pattern rather than a plain pile, so the surface catches the light unevenly and shifts as you move past it, in the way a good velvet always should. The cotton base gives it a matt, slightly heavier hand than a viscose velvet, which suits the bohemian, well-worn mood of the Long Weekend collection it belongs to. The horizontal repeat runs the full width of the cloth. Because the motif is woven rather than embossed afterwards, it will not flatten with wear the way a stamped pile velvet can.

The composition is 83 per cent cotton and 17 per cent polyester. It is 134 centimetres wide with a 60 centimetre vertical repeat and a horizontal repeat of 134 centimetres, tested to 9,000 rubs on the Wyzenbeek wire mesh scale. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Denim, a workable mid-blue, and Plum/Green, a richer, more layered combination.

We would put this on an armchair or a headboard where a velvet with some texture is wanted rather than a flat plain, or hang it as curtains in a bedroom for real weight and warmth at the window. A bedspread in it, folded rather than fitted, sits well with plain linen sheets. A pair of cushions in Plum/Green on a plain linen sofa is an easy way to bring the texture in without recovering anything. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A making-up note: velvet has a nap, so cut every piece running the same direction and have your maker check this before stitching, since light catches the pile differently depending on which way it runs. Allow one repeat per drop for the pattern. Dry clean only, and never crush the pile with heavy pressing.
