Ocean Check takes the same crisp, printed hand as the rest of Westerly Stripes and turns it into a bold, even windowpane, a grid of blue on natural with each square roughly 22 centimetres across. It is a confident, graphic check rather than a country tweed, printed rather than woven, which keeps the colour flat and the edges clean. In a room it does the work a good check has always done, giving pattern and plains alike something square and calm to sit against.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 132 centimetres wide, with a 22 centimetre repeat both vertically and horizontally, so the grid reads as a true square. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Blue, a clean mid-blue on a warm natural ground that we find works as well in a coastal house as it does well inland, and it is easy to pull a cushion or a lampshade from.

We would put it on a window seat or a pair of curtains in a boy's bedroom or a boot room, on the seat of a set of kitchen chairs, or as the outside back and arms of a sofa fronted in a Mulberry floral. A Roman blind in it above a butler's sink is a simple, good thing, and it takes a plain linen well on the opposite side of a room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A check this size has to be set square, so ask your maker to centre the grid on each curtain and to match it across the leading edges of a pair; on upholstery, centre a full square on the inside back and seat and allow a little extra cloth for that. Being printed rather than woven, it should be cut carefully rather than pulled straight along a thread, and it must be dry cleaned rather than washed.
