On The Scent takes its name and its subject from the hunting field, hounds worked nose-down across a small, all-over repeat, printed on a smooth non-woven paper. It is a design with real wit as well as heritage, the kind of thing that turns up in a downstairs cloakroom or a boot room and makes people smile rather than simply admire it. With a repeat of only 12 centimetres, it reads as a texture as much as a picture.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 52 centimetres wide, with a 12 centimetre vertical repeat and a 52 centimetre horizontal one. There is one colourway, Stone, a pale, warm neutral ground with the hounds themselves picked out in a soft tan, which keeps them legible without shouting, and lets the paper sit happily against dark woodwork, tweed upholstery or a run of old sporting prints above a dado.
We would use it in a boot room, a gun room or a downstairs loo, where its subject matter is exactly in keeping, or in a corridor that leads out to the garden. It is a good background for a run of framed sporting prints rather than a wall that wants to be the main event. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the exact paste and match. With a repeat this short, a standard 10 metre roll gives close to four drops at 2.4 metres, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls, three if there are awkward returns. Buy from one batch.
