Round The Island is a printed cotton from Mulberry's Icons book, a scatter of small racing pennants and signal flags that nods to the house's sailing side without labouring the point. The ground is a plain, dry cotton that takes a crisp print well, and the flags are drawn at a scale that reads as texture from a distance and as detail up close. It is a cheerful, unfussy print, the sort that suits a house that is used rather than just looked at.

It is a 100 per cent cotton cloth, 136 centimetres wide, with an 82 centimetre vertical repeat and a 68 centimetre horizontal one, so the flags have plenty of room between them. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery, with enough width in the repeat to bring a bedspread into play as well. There are two colourways, Indigo and Blue, both cool and both easy to place against navy, white or a plain stone wall.

We would use it for curtains in a boy's bedroom, a boot room or a downstairs cloakroom, or as a loose cover on a single chair in a hallway. It also makes a good Roman blind in a bathroom or a utility room, where a small dose of pattern is welcome. Pair it with a plain navy or a narrow ticking stripe rather than another large motif. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a repeat over 80 centimetres, allow a full extra repeat per drop when you order curtains, and ask your maker to centre a complete flag at the leading edge. For upholstery, keep the motif whole on the inside back rather than cutting it at a seam. Dry clean only; it should never be washed or ironed on the face.
