Rustic Stripe is a wide, confident woven stripe in cotton and jute from Mulberry's Modern Country book, closer to an awning canvas than a formal furnishing stripe, with a 66 centimetre repeat that gives each band of colour real presence. The jute keeps the hand dry and slightly textured, and because it is woven rather than printed, both faces of the cloth look the same, which suits a chair or ottoman seen from every angle, and gives the stripe a slightly nubbly, handwoven quality rather than a crisp machine-perfect line.
The composition is 65 per cent cotton and 35 per cent jute, 135 centimetres wide, with the 66 centimetre horizontal repeat running down the length of the cloth. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There are two colourways, Spice and Red/Plum, the first a single warm terracotta tone, the second a richer combination that ties in with Mulberry's more traditional florals.
This is a stripe for a room that wants some backbone: curtains in a kitchen or a garden room, a bench cushion in a hall, or the main cloth on a pair of armchairs either side of a fire. Because the repeat is wide, it also reads well railroaded across a wide sofa. Pair it with a plain wool or one of Mulberry's smaller prints. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With a 66 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop for curtains, and ask your maker to centre a full band at the leading edge. Jute can shrink slightly, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and keep it away from direct steam or a very hot iron.
