Seaton is one of four coordinating weaves in Mulberry's Croft Weaves collection, described in the collection notes as a textured semi-plain, which is exactly what it is: a cloth with no obvious repeat or motif, just a fine, even, slightly irregular surface that reads as a sophisticated plain from any distance. It sits alongside Croft's herringbone and Monroe's smoother plain as the collection's middle ground. Because there is no repeat to speak of, it behaves more like a designer plain than a conventional weave, and it is easy to specify without worrying about matching or wastage.

The composition is 52 per cent viscose, 18 per cent cotton, 17 per cent linen and 13 per cent polyester, and it is 140 centimetres wide. Tested to 35,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains and general use. There are four colourways: Woodsmoke is the darkest and most versatile, Blue and Aqua the two cooler options, and Red the warmest and most assertive of the four.

Because it has no repeat to match, it is an easy, economical choice for a large piece: a sofa, a run of curtains across several windows, or a headboard. It also makes a calm backdrop for a patterned cushion or a Mulberry print elsewhere in the room. It is equally at home in a contemporary scheme or a more traditional one, since its interest lies in texture rather than a datable pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no pattern to align, making up is straightforward, though we would still ask your upholsterer to keep the cloth running the same way across a large piece so any subtle texture catches the light consistently. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron.
