Shepton Stripe is a woven, multi-fibre stripe from the Icons Fabric collection, a close, textured banding built from five different yarns rather than a single flat colour, which gives the cloth real depth and a slightly irregular, hand-woven quality. It behaves more like a texture than a graphic stripe, and it is a useful way to bring colour into a room without a large motif to plan around, or a repeat to match against a window.
The composition is 50 per cent cotton, 22 per cent viscose, 16 per cent acrylic, 9 per cent linen and 3 per cent nylon, 140 centimetres wide, with a 12 centimetre horizontal repeat. Tested to 20,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it is recommended for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery, best suited to lighter domestic use given the rub count. There are three colourways: Plum/Green, Teal/Spice and Red/Blue, each pairing two contrasting colours across the stripe rather than sitting in a single family.
We would use it on a pair of curtains in a study or a bedroom, or as upholstery on a chair that wants texture rather than a bold pattern. It also works well as a cushion or a window seat cushion alongside a Mulberry check, and it wears its colour without ever feeling loud. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: because the stripe is woven into the cloth, there is no motif to match beyond keeping the bands running true along the selvedge, so ask your maker to check this carefully across any seam or join. Line curtains for the best hang, and dry clean rather than wash.
