Somerset Check is a woven country check with wool at its heart, softened with viscose and cotton so it has the look of an estate tweed without the weight or the scratch. The check is roughly square, about 31 by 34.5 centimetres, and the yarns are blended rather than flat, so each colour has a heathered, slightly mottled quality and the whole thing reads as warm and easy from across the room. It is the cloth in Bruton Weaves we would put on a chair in a study.
The composition is 37 per cent wool, 18 per cent viscose, 15 per cent acrylic, 14 per cent cotton, 7 per cent polyamide, 6 per cent linen and 3 per cent polyester. It is 138 centimetres wide with a 31 centimetre vertical repeat and a 34.5 centimetre horizontal one, and it is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Six colourways: Nutmeg, Blue, Sand, Teal, Green and Ochre, each built around one colour. Nutmeg and Sand are the neutral ones; Ochre is the one that makes a room glow.
We would put it on a wing chair or a club sofa in a study, on an upholstered stool at the end of a bed, or as a pair of curtains in a snug with a leather chair. It is also a good bedspread over a plain linen. It pairs naturally with the Garden Party florals and with the Shetland Plaid paper. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A check has to be set square on a piece of furniture, so ask your upholsterer to centre the check on the inside back and seat and to match it across the front border, and allow an extra half metre per chair for that. Wool blends can take a light steam from the reverse but should be dry cleaned, never washed.
