Somerton Stripe is a fine printed stripe from Mulberry's Small Prints book, part of the same family as the Garden Party florals, with a repeat so tight it reads almost as a solid tone from across a room and only resolves into a stripe close up. It is printed on a viscose and linen ground, which gives it a softer, more fluid hand than a pure cotton ticking would have.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 3.7 centimetre horizontal repeat and no meaningful vertical one, since the stripe runs the length of the cloth. It is recommended for curtains and upholstery. There are eight colourways, more than any other design in this range: Blue and Old Blue are the coolest, Green and Ochre the plainest, Teal/Ochre and Russet/Teal the two-tone options, and Russet and Red/Green the warmest, giving a coordinate for almost any of Mulberry's Garden Party florals.

We use it chiefly as the quiet partner to a floral: a pair of curtains in a room with a Garden Party print on the sofa, or upholstery on dining chairs around a table dressed in something bolder. It also makes a neat Roman blind on its own, or piping and a border on a plainer cushion. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the stripe is so fine, ask your maker to cut on the stripe rather than the selvedge, and expect very little pattern loss when matching, since the repeat is under 4 centimetres. The viscose content gives the cloth a slight sheen that shows watermarks, so have it dry cleaned rather than washed.
