Somerton Stripe is a wallpaper stripe from the Print Club collection, an even, confident band with no fixed repeat to match, printed on a smooth non-woven paper. Like Mulberry's Marquee Stripe, it is the sort of pattern that tidies a room rather than decorating it outright: the walls read taller, the furniture in front of them looks more considered, and a floral elsewhere in the house has something plain to stand against.

The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with no repeat to match between drops. There are eight colourways in total; among them, Woodsmoke is the smoky neutral, Indigo the deep classic blue, Moss and Green the two garden tones, and Spice and Russet the warmest of the range. With eight to choose from, it is worth sampling two or three together, since a stripe changes considerably in mood between a hallway and a bedroom.

We use it in halls and stairwells, where a stripe helps a tall or narrow space, and in bathrooms above a painted dado. It is also a good paper for a small study with dark furniture, or under a bold curtain that needs a quieter, more orderly wall behind it to work properly. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Hanging note: as a non-woven paper it is normally pasted to the wall and hung dry, but check the leaflet in the roll for the exact paste instruction. The critical thing with any stripe is a plumb first drop, so have your decorator set a vertical line from the focal wall. With no repeat to lose, a 4 metre wall takes around two rolls at this width.
