Somerton Trellis is one of Mulberry's Small Prints, a neat diamond lattice printed at a scale so fine that it reads as a texture rather than a pattern from anywhere across a room. It belongs to a collection built on small, characterful motifs, drawn with the bohemian, slightly loose hand that runs through the brand's best work, and this is the most useful and the most classic of the group: a trellis does the quiet work of dressing a room without ever competing with a bigger print alongside it.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, which gives the print a soft sheen and a fluid drape rather than the dry hand of a pure linen. It is 138 centimetres wide, with a 9 centimetre vertical repeat and a 9.5 centimetre horizontal one, so there is almost no waste in cutting. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There are four colourways: Blue and Old Blue are close cousins, one fresher and one more faded; Russet/Teal pairs a warm line with a cool ground; and Red/Green is the most traditional. Old Blue is the one we reach for first.

We use a small trellis like this behind a bigger floral, on the inside of a wardrobe or a cupboard, and on a headboard or a pair of bedroom chairs where a large pattern would be too much. It also makes a good lining for curtains in a heavier Mulberry print. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

A small, tight repeat like this is forgiving to make up, so estimate quantities much as you would for a plain. The viscose content means it presses beautifully but creases if folded, so ask for it to be delivered rolled rather than flat-packed. It must be dry cleaned, and never ironed directly on the face.
