Somerton is the wallpaper companion to Somerton Stripe, a fine printed stripe from Mulberry's Print Club book translated onto a wide, 70 centimetre non-woven paper. It has the same close, almost solid-reading repeat as the fabric, so a wall papered in it looks considerably more textured than a conventional stripe wallpaper. From a distance the lines blur into a soft, tonal ground, and it is only on approach that the stripe itself becomes legible.
The paper is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 26 centimetre vertical repeat. There are five colourways: Espresso is the deepest and warmest, Moss and Emerald the two greens, Ochre the sunniest, and Red/Green the most traditional two-colour option, giving a wide range of coordinates for Mulberry's Garden Party fabrics, so there is a shade to suit almost any room in the house.
We would use it on all four walls of a small room, a cloakroom or a dressing room, where a fine stripe adds height without competing with anything else, or as the backdrop to a gallery of framed prints. It pairs naturally with the Somerton Stripe fabric in the same or a related colourway. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
As a non-woven paper it is usually pasted to the wall and hung dry; check the leaflet in the roll for the maker's own paste and match instruction, and take particular care to keep a fine stripe like this plumb from the very first drop, since any lean is more visible than on a busier pattern. A standard 10 metre roll gives three to four drops at a 2.4 metre ceiling, so allow three rolls for a 4 metre wall from the same batch.
